How it is formed: Smoky Quartz is popular for its translucent earth tones and has a few different varieties and they share the same chemical compound. Morion Quartz is said to be a result of natural radiation, giving it a deep grey or black color, whereas Cairngorm Quartz is found specifically in the Cairngorm Mountains of Scotland and is a distinct yellow-brown in tone. Heat treated smoky Quartz can also be sold as citrine because it will fade and turn a yellow hue. Smoky Quartz is usually found in igneous rocks and pegmatites with traces of aluminum and gamma irradiation which give its distinct smoke-like color.
