How it is formed: sometimes known as fluorspar in the mining industry. Fluorite tends to occur in vibrant, well-formed isometric crystals that form cubes and octahedrons, which are less common. It is deposited in veins by hydrothermal processes (hot water mixed with the right combo of chemicals, under high pressure) , commonly associated with metallic ores. It can also be found in the dips, caves or in between cracks of some limestones and Dolomites. It is a common mineral in hydrothermal and carbonate rocks worldwide.

Color: hues of purple, green & yellow, often banded in design. Sometimes colorless, blue, red, and black. Transparent to sub translucent

Mohs: 4 - can come in granular, massive, or euhedral sizes & can be scratched with a knife - brittle

Compound: CaF2- Calcium Fluoride

Fun Facts:

  • Used In The Production Of Hydrofluoric Acid (Aka: Hydrogen Fluoride In Water That Is Extremely Corrosive), Which Is A Main Ingredient In Organic & Non-Organic Chemicals That Use The Element Fluorine, Such As Toothpaste And Teflon. It Is Also Used In Aluminum Fluoride, Which Is One Of The Main Ingredients Found In Glazes Used For Ceramics.

  • Only Common Minerals With Four Directions Of Perfect Cleavage, Which Paired With Its Isometric Structure can Cause Gorgeous Natural Octahedrons.

  • Did You Know Some Fluorite Glows Under UV Light? In 1852 George Gabriel Stokes Created The Term Fluorescence When He Noticed The Fluorite Produces A Blue Glow “Beyond The Violet End Of The Spectrum” When Illuminated.

  • In Industry Terms, Sold In 3 Different Grades- Acid, Ceramic, And Metallurgical

Different Types of Fluorite:

Chlorophane - Variety of Fluorite That Is Thermoluminescent, Emitting Bright Green Light When Heated.

Yttrocerite - Variety of Fluorite In Which The Elements Cerium And Yttrium Partially Replace The Calcium In The Chemical Structure. Its Chemical Formula Is (Ca,Ce,Y)F2

Antozonite - Variety Of Fluorite Containing Uncombined Fluorine Ions. When Fractured Or Cleaved, This Variety Gives Off A Peculiar Ddor.

Blue John - Banded Purple And White (Or Purple And Yellow) Variety Of Fluorite.

Yttrofluorite - Variety Of Fluorite In Which The Element Yttrium Partially Replaces The Calcium In Its Chemical Structure. Its Chemical Formula Is: (Ca,Y)F2
