How it is formed: A member of the Jasper family, Mookaite was first found in Australia and to this day is still only sourced from the Kennedy Ranges of Western Australia. Mookaite was formed in the skeletal remains of radiolarian, a microscopic protozoa with a hard silica shell. Deposited over millennials as sediment in shallow areas of sea beds. As the waters receded, the remains were solidified by additional silica carried in groundwater, along with minerals that it then produced its beautiful combinations of red, burgundy, mustard-yellow, cream, white, brown, mauve and purple. Due to its formation, it is pretty awesome that you can find fossilized ammonites or belemnite remains in these rocks.
