How it is formed: Found in 1868 by Henry How in Nova Scotia, Canada- Howlite has quite an interesting discovery- the miners who first encountered howlite were actually annoyed to find it while extracting the gypsum and contacted Henry How to identify and remove it! How originally named it silico-boro-calcite, but James Dwight Dana changed it to Howlite to celebrate Henry for his accomplishments as a chemist, mineralogist and geologist. Howlite in crystal form is rare, and mostly found at Tick Canyon in California and Iona, Nova Scotia. This borate based mineral when not crystallized is also found in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Turkey, Germany, Russia and Mexico

Color: clear or white, sometimes transparent brown

Mohs: soft at 3; crystals formed only 1cm in size

Compound: calcium borosilicate hydroxide (Ca2B5SiO9(OH)5)
