How it is formed: Found in mountainous areas with lower temperatures and medium-high pressures in clay rich sedimentary rocks, igneous rocks like granite, or metamorphic pegmatites and form long blade-like crystals which are popular to many crystal enthusiasts. It is rarely translucent due to its high number of impurities, so if you find one more transparent, it is rare and desirable! Found all over the world but mostly in India, United States, South Africa, and France

Color: shades of blue, grey, black

Mohs: very unique physical properties- when measured perpendicular, it is 6.5-7 on the scale but when measured along the blade it is softer at a 4.5-5

  • Once Used As A Compass, Because Travelers Believed That Kyanite Could Follow Earth's Magnetic Pull & Could Help Them With Navigation; It Was Later Confirmed By Crystallography First That When It Contains Chromium And Iron, Magnetic Properties Are Produced
