How it is formed: Obsidian is a naturally forming volcanic glass, usually formed by the perfect mix of rapid cooling and viscous silica rich lava flow, which is what gives it such a fragile and glassy yet tough structure. Since it is 80% glass and is not considered a crystal due to how quickly the lava cools, it does not allow the minerals to crystallize. Obsidian is mineral-like, but not a true mineral because as a glass, it is not crystalline. In addition, its composition is too complex to comprise a single mineral, so sometimes it is classified as a mineraloid. Citation
Color: Pure obsidian is usually translucent black or brown in appearance. brown usually has more iron or magnesium properties, and rarer white, round clustered crystals of cristobalite in the black glass produce a blotchy or snowflake pattern, or patterns made from gas bubbles called golden sheen, and rainbow effects made from inclusions by magnetite.
