Historically documented in 50 AD by Dioscorades, who named the mineral after the Greek word Pyro (which means fire) because when two pieces of pyrite are rubbed against metal or stone, sparks fly! It is formed in many geological settings where sulphur and iron are combined in organic, low oxygen environments where decaying organic material off gases sulphur & attaches to iron & occasionally other calcite and Quartz veins.
