Benefits:

How it is formed: Calcite is extremely common, formed from igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, mostly limestone and marble. It starts as a precipitous calcium carbonate and with local microorganisms and limestone, will crystallize. When limestone is subjected to high temperatures and pressure, it forms marble, which is a metamorphic rock. When in contact with higher levels of metamorphism, the calcite crystals formed are usually larger in size, the higher the temperature.

Color: commonly clear or white, but can be earth tones like green, red, brown, yellow, orange, red, and blue when charged with impurities.

Mohs Scale: 3

Compound: calcium carbonate (CaCO3)

Fun Facts:

  • Over 800 forms of calcite have been identified!

  • The warmer the temperature, the less soluble (it melts in water) this is called retrograde solubility.

  • Carved easily. Ancient Egyptians often made statues and décor out of calcite.
