How it is formed: Lapis Lazuli has been well known and cherished for ages. Lapis has been mined in northeast Afghanistan since the 7th millennium BCE! It is found in limestone caves rather than a traditional mine setting, such as, remote mountainous areas like, The Andes Mountains in Chile, where the largest piece of Lapis on a Peruvian grave sizing was discovered measuring: 24x12x8 inches
Color: blue or purple, sometimes paired with white calcite and golden pyrite
Mohs: softer at 5-5.5
Compound: mainly made of lazurite (Na,Ca)8(AlSiO4)6(S,SO4,Cl)1–2 but also contains traces of calcite, pyrite, and sodalite.
