How it is formed: only found in Java, Indonesia. This stone became popular in 1994. Bumble bee jasper is a rare and unique gemstone and member of the chalcedony family. It originates from the island of Bali near the hot vents (openings from the magma chamber in the earth's crust that creates a crack or vent due to the extremely hot liquefied rock under the surface) of the active Mount Papandayan. The condensation of heat and rain cooled down and formed these beautiful stones! Mining is always a risk due to the area where they are found, near spewing hot springs while being on an active volcano! (see photo below!)
Color: Very distinct yellow, orange, white and black bands
Mohs Hardness Scale: 7
Compound: Formed with gypsum sulfur and hematite
Fun Facts:
Not a jasper at all. It is a limestone composed mainly of calcite. Its components carry little to no quartz.
Is coated with resin to increase durability.
